Brash Higgins Grenache/Mataro 2022
The GR/M is Brash Higgins’ take on the classic Grenache-Mataro duo, and it’s a beauty.
Sourcing fruit from the Yangarra Estate in Blewitt Springs is a privilege, and Brad Hickey certainly does justice to this renowned biodynamic site. Situated on the sandy ridges along the eastern flank of McLaren Vale, these vines produce fruit with incredible definition.
For the 2022, Brad has stuck to his preferred method of co-fermentation. The Grenache (70%) and Mataro (30%) were picked simultaneously and fermented together using wild yeast, allowing the varieties to integrate from the very start rather than trying to find balance in the blending room later.
The wine spent 15 months in seasoned French puncheons, ensuring the oak remains a background element. In the glass, it offers a compelling mix of plushness and structure.
The Grenache drives the palate with generous red berry fruit and floral lift, while the Mataro grounds the wine with savoury spice and a distinct earthiness. Underneath it all runs the signature Blewitt Springs ultra-fine tannin profile. It is a polished, articulate wine that captures the best of both varieties, offering immediate enjoyment with enough structure to evolve.
