Mulline Single Vineyard Portarlington Chardonnay 2025
The Portarlington Chardonnay is the coastal antithesis to the warmer Sutherlands Creek bottling. Sourced from the Nurringa Park Vineyard, the site sits just a kilometre from the water, overlooking Port Phillip Bay. The combination of limestone-rich soils and constant ocean breezes creates a cooler microclimate, which is reflected in the wine's naturally high acidity and lean profile.
Ben Mullen utilises specific clones here - originally planted for sparkling wine - which ensures the wine stays in a tightly wound, citrus-driven spectrum. The winemaking is intentionally hands-off to preserve this freshness. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed to oak with full solids and fermented in a cold room to slow the process down. While a small portion underwent malolactic fermentation to add a layer of texture, the wine remains focused on its mineral core.
The 2025 is a white-fruited Chardonnay with a distinct sea-spray salinity. It is more about tension and length than overt fruitiness, offering a chalky finish that persists well after the first sip. It was arguably our favourite release this year in the Mulline Chardonnay suite.
