Named after the venomous Puff Adder snakeāa somber tribute to a vineyard worker lost in the 1940sāthis wine is pure Cinsault from the Kasteelberg Mountain. Sourced from a single parcel planted in 1973 on slate and decomposed shale soils, it is a variety that Eben Sadie treats with immense respect. Often called the "Pinot Noir of the Swartland," Cinsault has seen a massive revival in recent years, and Pofadder is right at the front of the pack.
It is notoriously tricky to farm, requiring rigorous sorting and careful handling to prevent oxidation, but when executed this well, it is revelatory. The winemaking is gentleāinvolving about 30% whole bunches, foot-stomping in open fermenters, and aging in old wooden casks. Eben notes that the tannins in the 2024 vintage are softer than usual, gifting us an exceptionally well-balanced and approachable young wine.
In the glass, it is all about elegance and perfume.
