Watervale Gardeners Grenache 1938 Plantings 2020

Watervale Gardeners Grenache 1938 Plantings 2020

Original gardener Clarence Hordacre – son of the Penwortham Coachman – worked several sections during the 1920s through 1950s and was a Steward at the prestigious annual Watervale Fruit Flower & Produce Show. 100% estate grown Grenache, Alc/vol 14.0% Total Acid 6.2g/L pH 3.26.

As with the 1954 Plantings Grenache, fruit was 100% destemmed and fermented for in 1T flowerpot fermenters. Some components getting up to 30 days of skin maceration prior to spending 9 months in older 500L French oak puncheons.

Dark red scarlet, with pungent raspberry & cranberry over rosemary aromatic uplift. Chased in the glass by lush ā€˜pillows’ of fruit stretching out to finish with juicy ā€˜jubey’ slightly sweeter concentration, almost Turkish. Delightedly, supported by powdery tannins. A ā€˜deeper darker’ version – with an extended length of palate – when compared to the ā€˜1954 Plantings’ Grenache… this wine sits beautifully balanced at the serious end of middleweight.
